Assemblyman Manuel Pérez to Announce Enterprise Zone Reform Legislation at Friday Press Conference

The office of Assemblyman Manuel Pérez released the following media advisory:

(SACRAMENTO) – This Friday, State Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez will hold a press conference to announce new legislation to reform and strengthen the state’s Enterprise Zone program, an effective economic development and job creation tool that Governor Brown has targeted for elimination in his budget proposal.

To be held at Ernie Ball, Inc., a manufacturing plant located in the Coachella Valley Enterprise Zone (CVEZ), the press conference will also include remarks by business owner Sterling Ball, as well as by the mayor of Coachella, Eduardo Garcia, and CVEZ Manager, Mark Weber. Managers from the 80th District’s other two Enterprise Zones – Daniel Fitzgerald of the Calexico-County EZ and Diane Cason of the Imperial Valley EZ – will also participate. Employees of Ernie Ball, Inc. will be present to share their stories.

“We are putting a human face on this issue,” said Pérez. “Proposed budget cuts that trigger business closure and job loss do not help us solve our economic and budget challenges. Cuts such as this are in fact extremely expensive for our state, due to the harm they cause our business climate, our workers, and our communities. Our state cannot afford the elimination of Enterprise Zones. So, we are reaching out to the Governor on this issue. We have the opportunity before us to improve this economic development program. Let’s protect it and, at the same time, make sure it does an even better job of encouraging business investment and job creation.”

Date: Friday, February 4, 2011
Time: 10:30 a.m.

Speakers: Mark D. Weber, Coachella Valley Enterprise Zone Authority; Mayor Eduardo Garcia, City of Coachella; Sterling Ball, entrepreneur and owner of Ernie Ball, Inc.; Assemblyman V. Manuel Pérez (D-Coachella)
