Assemblyman Perez Calls For Protecting The Enterprise Zones

The Desert Sun reports on Jobs Committee Chairman V. Manuel Perez’s talk to the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership:

PALM DESERT – When Assemblyman V. Manuel Perez clicked to the fourth slide in his presentation to the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership, the deep orange coloration on the map of the United States proved his point about the strain the region has been under.

It was code for regions under the greatest economic stress.

“We are in the thick of it,” the Coachella Democrat said Wednesday.

But even with joblessness in Imperial County at 28 percent, and Riverside County at 14.5 percent, Perez told 50-plus business, civic and education leaders gathered at The Classic Club for CVEP’s Legislative Luncheon that the valley is destined for great things.

“It’s not government that creates jobs; it’s entrepreneurs,” he said. “It’s important that government work with the business community as partnerships” to boost the valley’s potential for economic growth.

Perez, who chairs the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy, said the valley could one day become a distribution hub as part of an initiative by the Mexican government to build a port in Baja California.

“We need to protect the Enterprise Zones,” he said.
