The Los Angeles Times reports that the California Democratic Party is sponsoring a ballot initiative that would eliminate the Enterprise Zone. The Legislative Analysts Office states that this measure would result in a $1 billion tax increase targeted specifically at business owners operating in the poorest parts of the state.
The Times quotes John Burton, Chairman of the State Democratic Party, as explaining:
The threat of an initiative could become a factor in the current legislative debate, Burton said. The governor’s bill might look better to lawmakers, he said, “once they see the depths of hell” posed by the ballot measure.
