Nine California Mayors Sign Letter Supporting Enterprise Zones

The letter begins:

Dear Governor Brown:

As mayors of the largest cities in California, we are writing to emphasize the importance of the Enterprise Zone (EZ) program as a critical job retention and creation tool for California. As a former mayor yourself, you know that local jurisdictions have precious few incentive tools to offer businesses – who hire our residents and invest in our neighborhoods – that might be making site selection decisions. The EZ program fulfills an important business retention and attraction need. But more importantly, the EZ program incentivizes the hiring of some of our most disadvantaged populations – veterans, youth, the unemployed, the economically disadvantaged, and residents of our inner city communities. By rewarding good behavior with the EZ program, we are encouraging business investment in our state while also encouraging investment in our own residents. This is a thoughtful policy that ought to be continued
